Spreadsheet displaying incorrectly

Modified on Mon, 23 Mar at 2:40 AM

This article provides information on how to identify and resolve issues with spreadsheets that do not display correctly (eg. displaying in a jumble of characters).

Spreadsheet files types generated through SEQTA

SEQTA outputs two spreadsheet format files, .XLSX (Excel) and .CSV (universal spreadsheet format).  The file format generated will depend on which report is run.

Spreadsheet displays as a jumble of characters

Depending on the settings on the computer or device being used, these files types may not open in Excel or default program. A good indicator of this issue is if the spreadsheet opens in a browser window.

Resolution for spreadsheet display issues

In most cases, the school's IT department can resolve this issue by setting the 'file associations' correctly on the computer, or in the web-browser.

The following method should also allow the document to be viewed correctly.

  1. Run the report
  2. Right-click the 'Click here to access you document' button
  3. Select Save link as... from the right-click menu
  4. Give it a filename and choose a save location
  5. Open the file directly from that save location
