Applying and managing cutoffs

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Cutoffs can be set on an assessment level, programme level, the course type level or globally. The process for entering cutoffs differs depending on which level of cutoffs is to be used. Information on the cutoff hierarchy is available in the article Cutoff hierarchy .

Cutoff templates can be created to save time and increase accuracy. Please see the article Creating and Managing Cutoff Templates.

Assessment cutoffs

Cutoffs can be set on an Assessment level. Assessment cutoffs are typically only used if different cutoffs need to be applied for assessments in the same programme. If this is not the case one of the methods below is a better alternative.

This option requires the setting Allow per-assessment cutoffs to be enabled in the Course type selected in the Marks book settings.

  1. Go to the Teaching workspace > Timetable > My classes
  2. Select the Load programme icon then select Overview of assessments
  3. Click on the assessment, scroll to bottom of page or use the Jump to button in the top right hand corner to go to Cutoffs / Grading scale.
  4. Click the Customise button to edit the cutoffs as required. A cutoff template can be used; these are set up in Administration workspace > Data management > Cutoff templates.
  5. Click Ok then Save the assessment changes.

Programme cutoffs

Cutoffs can be set on a Programme level. This is typically used if multiple programmes are using the same course type, BUT where one or more of the programmes must have different cutoffs that need to be applied. Programme cutoffs are not used to determine grades if cutoffs have been set at an Assessment level.

By default the Course type cutoffs will be applied, but a programme cutoff scheme can be created by selecting a cutoff template or edited directly in the table.

  1. Go to the Teaching workspace > Timetable > My classes
  2. Click on the Load programme icon
  3. Click on Marks book settings
  4. Set the Course type as required. Most likely (in this scenario) the correct course type will have already been set.
  5. Apply a Cutoff template from the drop-down list, or edit the cutoff table by adding rows and setting the break-point values and grade letter/emoji.
  6. Click Save.

Course type cutoffs

The Course type cutoffs are the most common method for applying cutoffs. The cutoffs are applied to all programmes using that Course type. Course type cutoffs will not be used if cutoffs have been set at a Programme or Assessment level.

  1. Go to the Administration workspace > Curriculum setup > Course types.
  2. Select the Course type or choose New course type.
  3. Add or edit the required rows and set the break-point values and grade letter/emoji for each row.
  4. Click Save

Global cutoffs

If there are no cutoffs set in the Course type and no other cutoffs have been applied (eg. Assessment cutoffs or Programme cutoffs) then the Global cutoffs will be applied. These are stored in the database and can only be changed by SEQTA. Please contact the SEQTA Support team via the Help portal to request a change. The change must be authorised by the school's SEC.
